The violent eruptions of the Erciyes (3916 m) and Hasan (3268 m) volcanoes three million years ago, covering the surrounding plateau with lava and volcanic ash, are at the origin of the most unusual landscape on earth. Suffering from wind and water erosion, the soil of this plateau has shredded and bristled, in places, with monumental needles, “fairy chimneys” oddly crowned with flat stones, cones with tormented forms perfecting the most bewildering surreal decor that the imagination of the most delirious sculptors can conceive. In other places, it is cut by valleys, dug by canyons at the bottom of which meanders a stream, giving rise to a lunar landscape.
